Question about stringing..can you string by halves?

I'm using a relatively expensive hybrid of main and cross strings right now. The cross strings of the racquet just broke, but the main strings still seem to be in good condition. Is it possible to simply remove the cross strings from the racquet while leaving the mains intact, and restring only the crosses? Or would this possibly have some future side effects?
